In a recent incident, the Alaska Peninsula region experienced a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale. The seismic event occurred on Sunday morning at 06:48 GMT, approximately 55 miles (89 kilometers) southwest of Sand Point. The earthquake’s depth was relatively shallow, reaching 9.3 kilometers. As a precautionary measure, the US Tsunami Warning System promptly issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake.
The National Tsunami Warning Center, located in Palmer, Alaska, declared the tsunami warning for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula. Meanwhile, the potential tsunami threat level for other coastal areas in North America, including the US and Canadian Pacific coasts, is presently being assessed by the authorities, as stated by the National Tsunami Warning Center to the news agency AFP.
It is worth noting that Alaska previously experienced the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America during March 1964. This devastating event struck Anchorage and triggered a tsunami that affected the Gulf of Alaska, the US West Coast, and Hawaii. Tragically, over 250 individuals lost their lives as a result of the 1964 earthquake and its ensuing tsunami.
