Dallas, Texas — June 29, 2026

In a stunning development that marks a new era for de-extinction science, Colossal Biosciences has confirmed the birth of a healthy newborn dire wolf pup named Lyra — the first offspring produced by the genetically engineered dire wolves the company brought back from extinction nearly two years ago.

The announcement came directly from Matt James, Colossal’s Chief Animal Officer, who broke the news on X (formerly Twitter) moments ago:

“Incredible day at the preserve. Our dire wolves have welcomed a healthy newborn pup into the world today. The first generation we brought back from extinction has now produced the next — meet Lyra. This is history in the making. More updates to come. #DeExtinction #DireWolf”

According to initial reports, Lyra (a female pup) was born earlier today at Colossal’s secure ecological preserve. Veterinary teams describe her as vigorous, nursing well, and under constant monitoring. She is reported to be strong and alert, already showing early signs of the powerful build characteristic of the dire wolf lineage.

How Colossal Resurrected the Dire Wolf

This moment builds on Colossal’s landmark achievement in functional de-extinction. In October 2024 and January 2025, the company created the world’s first living dire wolves in over 10,000 years: males Romulus and Remus (born Oct. 1, 2024) and female Khaleesi (born Jan. 30, 2025), who is believed to be Lyra’s mother.

The Science in Brief:

  • Scientists sequenced ancient dire wolf DNA from fossils — including a 13,000-year-old tooth from Ohio and a 72,000-year-old ear bone from Idaho.
  • Using the gray wolf genome as a base, they made 20 targeted CRISPR edits across 14 genes to restore key traits: white coat, massive skull, broad shoulders, powerful legs, and iconic vocalizations.
  • Edited cells were used to create embryos via somatic cell nuclear transfer.
  • Embryos were implanted into domestic hound-mix surrogate mothers.
  • All original pups were delivered via planned cesarean section by specialized teams.

The animals have thrived in a 2,000-acre protected habitat, exhibiting natural wolf behaviors while contributing to research on genetics, welfare, and conservation tools.

Why This Matters — A Turning Point

The successful birth of Lyra proves that de-extincted animals can reproduce successfully, moving the field from “proof of concept” to a potentially sustainable reality. Experts say it could accelerate similar work on other species while generating new tools to protect endangered ones.Colossal has stressed ethical safeguards, alignment with IUCN guidelines, and top-tier animal welfare (American Humane certified).

The animals remain in managed care and are not slated for wild release.

This is breaking history in real time. Stay tuned for updates from Colossal, including first photos and health details on little Lyra.
