Jupiter, Florida – July 22nd 2026

In a dramatic early-morning raid reminiscent of the highly publicized 2024 Peanut the Squirrel incident, authorities seized Sanchez, the internet-famous raccoon known for his millions of views on TikTok, from his home in Jupiter today.

The news broke via the official X account @SanchezzRaccoon (associated with the popular @sancheztheraccoon TikTok page), which posted the following statement:

“Heartbroken to announce that Sanchez has been taken by authorities this morning. This gentle soul who brought joy to millions is now in custody. We are cooperating fully and fighting for his return.”

The post quickly went viral, amassing thousands of reactions within hours as fans expressed shock and anger. @SanchezzRaccoon Sanchez, along with his companion raccoon Luna, skyrocketed to fame on TikTok under the handle @sancheztheraccoon. The account, which describes itself as offering a “peek into the secret life of Sanchez and little sis Luna,” boasts hundreds of thousands of followers and tens of millions of likes. Videos of Sanchez sleeping in drawers, “reclaiming” trash cans, chittering, and interacting playfully with his owners have garnered individual clips with tens of millions of views, turning the “sleepy señor” into a beloved trash panda celebrity.

Owners Bri and Rob Andrassy, who have maintained the animals under a Class III permit, shared lighthearted daily moments that resonated with audiences worldwide, positioning Sanchez as one of the most recognizable exotic pet stars on social media.

Parallels to the Peanut the Squirrel Tragedy

The seizure draws immediate comparisons to Peanut (P’Nut), the orphaned eastern gray squirrel who became a social media sensation before being seized by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officers in October 2024. Peanut and a raccoon companion named Fred were euthanized for rabies testing following complaints about unlicensed wildlife possession, igniting widespread backlash over government overreach. Peanut’s case even drew comments from political figures and became a symbol of regulatory excess.

Like Peanut, Sanchez’s popularity stemmed from close human interaction captured on camera, which authorities often cite as evidence in such cases.

Reasons for Seizure: Wildlife Laws and Public Health Concerns

Raccoons are native wildlife in Florida and classified under strict regulations. While Florida is one of a limited number of states where private ownership of raccoons is allowed with proper permits (typically requiring animals from licensed captive breeders and ongoing compliance), enforcement actions frequently target cases involving public complaints, permit issues, or perceived risks.

Key factors in such seizures often include:

  • Rabies and Zoonotic Disease Risks: Raccoons are high-risk carriers of rabies. Close human contact, as shown in viral videos, can trigger investigations, especially if a bite or exposure occurs.
  • Permit Compliance: Even legal owners must adhere to specific housing, veterinary, and inspection standards. Alleged violations or anonymous tips can lead to warrants.
  • Wildlife Protection Laws: Most states prohibit keeping truly wild-caught raccoons as pets; animals must be legally sourced to prevent habituation and ecological harm.

Authorities have not yet released full details on the specific triggers for Sanchez’s case, but sources indicate it followed patterns seen in high-profile social media animal cases.

Supporters are already mobilizing online, with calls for petitions and demands for transparency. The Andrassy family says they are working with legal counsel to secure Sanchez’s safe return.
