Elvis Presley’s sole offspring, Lisa Marie Presley, suffered a tragic end due to a bowel obstruction, as reported by the medical examiner’s office of Los Angeles County. Known for her own musical career, Presley met her untimely demise on January 12 after being abruptly taken to a hospital in California. She was 54 at the time.
Her last public appearance occurred a mere two days prior to her death, at the renowned Golden Globes. The official cause has been classified as natural. However, her passing ignited a heated dispute amongst family members over the legitimacy of her will.
On the day of Lisa Marie’s death, emergency services were summoned to her residence in Calabasas, where they discovered her suffering from cardiac arrest. A detailed statement from the medical examiner’s office on Thursday clarified that the cardiac arrest was triggered by a “small bowel obstruction”, a medical condition that occurs when the small intestine becomes blocked. This can be due to various factors, including colon cancer, medication, or post-surgical adhesions.
Presley had undergone bariatric surgery a few years prior, and this procedure was identified as the root cause of the obstructive adhesions in her case. The medical examiner’s report commented, “This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery.”
Dr. Angelique Campen, an ER physician at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, in conversation with CBS, the BBC’s US partner, stated that fatalities from small bowel obstructions are uncommon. In most instances, patients suffering from such a condition would feel intense pain and would most likely be hospitalized.
Following her demise, Presley, recognized for her songwriting and singing, was laid to rest beside her son, Benjamin Keough, who tragically took his own life in 2020. The aftermath of her death saw Priscilla Presley, her mother, contesting the validity of the will, claiming ignorance about an amendment made in 2016 that replaced her as a trustee of Lisa Marie’s estate.
The amendment appointed Benjamin Keough and Riley, Lisa Marie’s daughter, as co-trustees. They were both children from her first marriage to Danny Keough. The lawsuit ended in a settlement in May, with the particulars kept confidential.
Born in 1968, Lisa Marie Presley carried on her father’s musical legacy, releasing three albums throughout her career. Apart from her musical journey, she made headlines with her four notable marriages to Danny Keough, global pop icon Michael Jackson, actor Nicolas Cage, and musician Michael Lockwood.
