In a strategic move to enhance operational efficiencies, Aramco has forged a partnership with OQ Technology, a global leader in 5G IoT network operations. The collaboration aims to concentrate on automation and satellite IoT connectivity, offering significant benefits for the oil giant’s remote site infrastructures.
Satellite IoT networks have gained widespread acceptance due to their ability to provide low-cost connectivity to IoT devices directly from space, utilizing low power. Unlike terrestrial networks that cover only a fraction of the planet’s surface (around 15-20 percent), satellite networks can extend coverage to nearly the entire surface, enabling users to reach isolated or inaccessible areas.
Under the agreement, OQ Technology will expand its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) 5G-IoT services and solutions to connect Aramco’s Intelligent Integrated Node (IIN), an innovative automation infrastructure technology developed by MOXA Inc.
LEO 5G-IoT refers to a network infrastructure that combines the power of fifth-generation wireless communication with satellites placed in low Earth orbit. These satellites, working together as a constellation, ensure global coverage and enable high-speed, low-latency connectivity.
This collaboration aims to integrate the control of instruments, monitoring systems, and edge computing into one reliable device, thereby enhancing operational efficiency downstream. By reducing raw material consumption and minimizing personnel travel to remote sites, the integration of 5G IoT and IIN technologies contributes to a more efficient green economy, which aligns with Saudi Arabia’s 2030 vision.
Omar Qaise, founder and CEO at OQ, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating that it will advance technological cooperation between Aramco and OQ. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) will foster the development of IoT technology in various sectors, including applications, personal products, safety, security, surveillance, fire protection, automotive, healthcare, and intelligent defense, both within the Kingdom and globally.
Furthermore, the collaboration aims to create an integrated package that combines both technologies, promoting their adoption in the network manufacturing value chain within the oil and gas sector. It is worth mentioning that Aramco and MOXA’s IIN technology received prestigious awards, such as the 2018 Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Prize for Inventors and the 2020 International Society of Automation Excellence-In-Innovation award.
Aramco’s venture arm, Wa’ed Ventures, previously co-led OQ’s €13 million ($13.5 million) series A funding round in September 2022. This partnership not only solidifies their financial collaboration but also accelerates the development and deployment of advanced IoT solutions.
In conclusion, the alliance between Aramco and OQ Technology signifies a major step forward in leveraging satellite IoT connectivity to enhance operational efficiencies in remote site infrastructures. By combining cutting-edge technologies, the partnership aims to drive progress in various industries while aligning with Saudi Arabia’s vision for a more efficient and sustainable future.
