What is a Canada Transit Visa?
If you are in transit through Canada and do not plan to leave the airport, you may not need a visa.
A Canada Transit Visa is a short-term visa that allows you to travel through Canadian airports, so long as you will be leaving by plane within 48 hours. If your layover is longer than this, or if you intend to leave the airport during your stay, then you will need to apply for a regular visitor visa.
You may need a transit visa even if you do not plan to leave the airport if:
– You are travelling from the United States on a connecting flight;
– You have been refused entry into Canada;
– You have been ordered removed from Canada;
– You require medical treatment; or
– You are carrying restricted goods.
If any of these situations apply to you, then you will need to complete an application for a transit visa. The application must be submitted online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website, and there is a non-refundable processing fee of CAD$75. Once your application has been approved, you will be issued with a single-entry transit visa which will allow you to travel through Canada within the specified time period. Processing Time of the Canada Transit Visa
If you are planning to transit through Canada, you will need to apply for a Canada Transit Visa. The processing time for a Canada Transit Visa varies depending on the country you are applying from. In general, it takes about 2 weeks to process a transit visa application. However, if you are applying from a country with a high volume of applications, it may take longer.
Advantages of Having a Canada Transit Visa
If you are planning to travel to Canada, you may need a transit visa. A transit visa allows you to stop in Canada for a layover or change of flights. Transit visas are usually valid for 48 hours, but can be issued for up to 96 hours. Transit visas are not required if you have a valid Canadian visa or an eTA.
There are several advantages of having a transit visa:
1. You will not need to apply for a new visa if your travel plans change and you need to stay in Canada longer than originally planned.
2. Transit visas are less expensive than other types of visas.
3. You can apply for a transit visa even if you do not have a confirmed ticket out of Canada.
4. If you are from a country that is not eligible for an eTA, you will need a transit visa to travel through Canada.
5. You may be able to apply for a multiple-entry transit visa, which would allow you to enter and exit Canada multiple times during the validity of the visa.
What is the Difference Between a Temporary Resident and a Transit Visa?
There are two types of visas that allow foreign nationals to transit through Canada: a Transit visa and a Temporary Resident visa.
A Transit visa is valid for 48 hours and allows the holder to change planes in Canada en route to their final destination. A Transit visa is not required if the foreign national is:
– in possession of a valid United States Green Card;
– travelling on a direct flight between the United States and another country; or
– transiting through Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on a direct flight between Asia and the United States.
A Temporary Resident visa, also known as a visitor visa, is valid for up to six months and allows the holder to enter Canada for tourism, business, or personal purposes. A Temporary Resident visa is required for all other foreign nationals who do not fall under one of the exceptions listed above.
Requirements for Obtaining the Temporary Resident
If you are in transit through Canada and do not plan to leave the designated transit area of the airport, you do not need a visa. You will need a valid travel document, such as a passport, and may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). If you plan to leave the airport during your transit, you will need a visitor visa or an eTA.
You can apply for a visitor visa or an eTA online or at a Canadian Visa Office outside of Canada. If you are applying online, you must have:
a credit or debit card to pay the processing fee;
access to a printer to print your confirmation page; and
a valid email address so we can communicate with you about your application.
If you cannot apply online, you can get help applying at some Canadian Visa Offices. For example, if you are transiting through Canada on your way to the United States, and do not plan to leave the airport, you can apply for a U.S. non-immigrant visa at the same time that you apply for your Canadian transit visa.
