The Australian state of Victoria has shocked the sporting world by backing out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, citing escalating costs as the primary reason. Premier Daniel Andrews announced the decision, stating that initial estimates of AUD 2.6 billion had soared to a staggering AUD 7 billion. Victoria’s withdrawal has left organizers and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) disappointed and scrambling to find alternative solutions.
The Commonwealth Games, a prestigious multi-sport event featuring athletes from 72 Commonwealth countries and territories, takes place every four years. The most recent edition, held in Birmingham, England in 2022, was the largest Games to date. Victoria was selected as the 2026 host last March after struggling to find a suitable location amidst a lack of interest and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The unexpected decision by Victoria caught the event’s organizing committees off guard. They claim they received no prior warning about cost overruns and were not given an opportunity to explore alternative proposals. The CGF expressed disappointment, stating that Victorian authorities had not previously raised concerns about costs. They criticized the lack of communication and collaboration in finding mutually agreeable solutions.
According to the CGF, Victoria’s quoted estimated cost of AUD 6 billion was 50% higher than the figure advised to the Organizing Committee board in June. The federation blamed the state for making costly decisions regarding sports and venues against their recommendations and those of the Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA).
CGA’s Chief Executive Officer, Craig Phillips, accused the government of deliberately disregarding recommendations to relocate events to Melbourne in order to reduce costs. He labeled the claimed cost overruns as a “gross exaggeration” and called for an independent financial analysis to be conducted.
The Games were originally planned to be held from March 17 to 29, 2026, in regional Victoria, with the aim of providing much-needed investment and international exposure to areas outside Melbourne. Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Gippsland, and Shepparton were set to host 20 sports and 9 fully-integrated Para sports, including weightlifting, lawn bowls, and track cycling.
Instead of hosting the Games, Victoria has committed to constructing at least 1,300 affordable homes and the promised permanent sporting facilities. These initiatives aim to boost regional tourism and events in the state.
